This year the EG Awards are back with a vengeance. With the light at the end of Covid lockdown tunnels looking ever brighter, the team at EG are increasingly hopeful that we will be celebrating the very many and deserving winners of this years awards with you, face-to-face at the Grosvenor House hotel on 28 October. Contingency plans are always in place, however.
But before we can celebrate the winners, entries need to be collected and judges need to judge.
To help you submit the very best entry for any one of 21 categories EG will be celebrating in October, we’ve brought together some of our judges to find out exactly what they will be looking for.
In this special episode of the EG Property Podcast, EG editor Samantha McClary talks with Kirsten Hewson from Shoosmiths, Richard Rees from Savills and William Beardmore-Gray from Knight Frank about what they will be looking for from three of this year’s categories – UK Company, Global Company and a new category for 2021, City of the Year.
Editor Sam McClary and deputy editor Tim Burke join Jess Harrold to round up the week, beginning with an in-depth discussion of the results of EG's latest LGBTQ+ in real estate survey. The findings offer a mix of positive steps forward, disappointments and some depressing stories that highlight exactly how far real estate needs to go to be a truly diverse and inclusive industry.

In another Future of Real Estate podcast, Damian Wild speaks to UK Hospitality’s CEO Kate Nicholls about the impact on the sector of a third lockdown, and how recovery is some way off despite good news on the vaccine front.
Nicholls warns that much of the sector will collapse without help from government and support from landlords. And she says that landlords hoping to recover all the rent they have lost from hospitality businesses are being unrealistic.
More than that though, Nicholls says that the impact of the coronavirus pandemic will be felt by urban centres nationwide. What’s needed is nothing less than a Marshall plan for town centres to ensure their survival.
Fresh changes are likely to be ahead for the UK's real estate investment trusts. Treasury consultations on asset holding companies and the broader UK fund regime include various proposals, large and small, for altering how REITs are managed and treated.
The hope is that these changes will encourage more funds to set up shop in the UK, bolstering the industry, creating jobs and encouraging investment. But could some of the proposals risk damaging the “kitemark” of quality that the UK REIT regime has developed over the years?
