West End landlord Shaftesbury’s pretax profit jumped by 28% in the six months to 31 March despite concerns over the retail sector.
The landlord reported profit of £102m for the six months to the end of March and a 3.4% rise in net asset value to £2.5bn.
Chief executive Brian Bickell said: “Across our portfolio, the data we collect is showing a clear trend of year-on-year turnover growth for our restaurant, leisure and retail tenants, reflecting the buoyancy of the West End’s economy. Chief executive of Segro, David Sleath had a baptism of fire when he joined the property industry after 17 years as an accountant.
Initially working under the wing of the late Ian Coull as finance director, the company sold its US business at the top of the market before Segro came crashing down to earth as it had to launch a rescue rights issue following the global financial crisis.
Now the company has been turned around to be a pure play logistics company and it is at the forefront of the property industry and online retailing.
In an interview with EG’s head of news and finance, David Hatcher at Hogan Lovells’ headquarters at a Profile networking event Sleath looked back on the highs and lows of his career and talked about how he envisages the next stage of the company’s evolution.
