Scrapping the mayor: How will Bristol fare under new leadership?
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
Bristol’s electorate has spoken: the role of city mayor will be dropped when Marvin Rees finishes his term of office in 2024. It will be replaced by a committee system in which decisions will be ratified by groups of councillors rather than by a cabinet appointed by the mayor. Supporters of the change hope it will allow for a more democratic form of government.
In this 55-minute podcast, EG’s guests discuss how Bristol reached this point and what it means for development in the city. Will it slow things down or will it help pave the way for getting Bristol’s future growth right?
Joining associate editor Julia Cahill are:
Jonathan Lambert, director, development, Savills Bristol
John Savage, executive chairman, Bristol Chamber of Commerce & Initiative
Christine Townsend, councillor – Green Party, Bristol City Council

Thursday Oct 06, 2022
Thursday Oct 06, 2022

In this 40-minute discussion, recorded during LREF week with the support of JLL, EG’s guests discuss the outlook for life sciences in the city, the hurdles to creating new real estate and why the capital must collaborate with, rather than compete against, other regional centres of excellence.
Joining deputy editor Tim Burke are:

- Matt Fitter, investor and developer lead, life sciences, JLL
- Ivana Poparic, head of cluster development, MedCity

Veganism for buildings: Is retrofit or redevelopment the answer?
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, recorded live at the London Real Estate Forum, EG editor Samantha McClary sits down with five specialists from across the sector to make the case for regeneration or restoration (or retrofit) of buildings.
With a clear focus from the industry to do the right thing when it comes to climate change, there is an increasing proportion of refurbishments taking place rather than full scale development. An increasingly loud voice that is anti knock it down and build it up – see plans for M&S’s HQ on Oxford Street as an example – has left many in the development and planning world, unsure of what is expected of them.
Listen in to understand more about the case for and against knocking it down and starting again to deliver better and how the argument for redevelopment versus retrofitting is eerily similar to that of veganism versus an omnivorous diet.
Helping figure out the answer are:
- Ali Abbas, managing director, head of UK, Art-Invest
- Chris Cummings, director, Savills Earth, Savills
- Derek Griffin, head of acquisitions, Whitbread
- William Seymour, partner – real estate, Shoosmiths
- Katharine Woods, associate, DP9

Tuesday Oct 04, 2022
In this EG Property Podcast, part of a series of listens focussed on London’s built environment, EG editor Samantha McClary stays up well past her bedtime to understand more about what the night-time economy is and what is needed from the real estate sector and government to ensure that it gets as much support as the daytime economy.
Listen in to hear more about how we need to change the narrative around the nighttime economy, shifting it away from a discussion about clubs and bars and towards business and people, and how central government support is essential to ensure the capital can make the most of life after dark.
Sharing their insights and expertise in this circa 35-minute listen are:
- Michael Kill, chief executive, Night Time Industries Association
- Ros Morgan, chief executive, Heart of London Business Alliance
- Matt Sims, chief executive, Croydon Business Improvement District
- Melanie Williams, head of real estate & hospitality sectors, DWF

Monday Oct 03, 2022
In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, EG editor Samantha McClary is in discussion with four experts from across the built environment to understand how the UK’s cities are “levelling up” – or not – regardless of the politics.
Levelling up was barely mentioned in the recent “mini budget”, reports say barely any of the levelling up funds have actually been spent and EG figures show that since the first time then PM Boris Johnson utter those two words “levelling up” in 2020, our regional cities continue to lag behind the capital. Investment is 23% lower, take up 12% lower and average rents a whopping 54% lower.
Government is unlikely to really be able to level up this country, so how can our cities and the built environment make sure that they can?
Helping to figure out the answer are:
- Deborah Gordon Brown, partner, Shoosmiths
- Kat Martindale, director and head of ESG research, Savills
- Simon McCabe, chief executive, Scarborough Group International
- Jackie Sadek, regeneration practitioner, Urban Strategy
This episode runs as an aural accompaniment to EG’s UK Cities Guide , which looks at how well our cities are performing when it comes to the green agenda and the importance of the role of infrastructure – physical and digital – when it comes to creating an equal UK.

- Amanprit Arnold, senior policy officer, Greater London Authority
- Janine Cole, sustainability and social impact director, GPE
- Andy Mercer, head of ESG, Colliers
